Victorian State Budget 2023/24

More regional travel, more often, for less

Our regional rail network is the backbone of our state, connecting communities to work, study and spend time with each other.

So we’ve made regional fares cheaper with $190 million towards capping regional fares at metro prices.

The Budget is also investing $601 million to build another 23 new Victorian‑made VLocity trains, strengthening and boosting the reliability of our regional network and directly supporting up to 100 local jobs.

Building more trains also means we can run more services, more often. The Budget also invests $219 million for service uplifts across our rail network, including extra weekend services on major regional train lines.

To improve reliability of the regional network, the 2023/24 Budget will also deliver:

  • $322 million to increase the capacity of the South Dynon maintenance facility as we expand the VLocity fleet.
  • $111 million to support regional rail network operations, reliability and punctuality, including operating and maintenance costs for regional network assets and an increase to rolling stock maintenance capacity to support the growing regional train fleet.
